Tensa Zangetsu replica: black-bladed katana inspired by Ichigo's Bankai from Bleach

Zangetsu: Ichigo's Zanpakuto, Shikai vs Tensa Zangetsu

Zangetsu is Ichigo Kurosaki's zanpakuto in Bleach, his spirit sword. In its Shikai form it is an oversized cleaver with no guard; in its Bankai form, Tensa Zangetsu, it shrinks into a slim black katana with a manji-shaped guard. Below, how the two compare, who the spirits behind the sword are, and what a replica looks like.

What Is Zangetsu in Bleach?

Every Soul Reaper in Bleach carries a zanpakuto (斬魄刀), a spirit sword with its own name, its own personality and its own powers. Ichigo's zanpakuto is Zangetsu (斬月), which means "Slaying Moon". He became a Substitute Soul Reaper in the first chapters, after absorbing most of Rukia Kuchiki's powers, and the Zangetsu sword has been with him ever since.

Zangetsu stands out from every other Bleach zanpakuto in two ways. Most zanpakuto rest in a plain sealed form and only change when their owner speaks a release command, which unlocks the Shikai. Ichigo's has no sealed form and no release command: it is always in its released state, which is why he carries an enormous sword on his back from the very beginning. The second difference is that more than one spirit is tied to the sword. That story comes much later, and it has its own spoiler warning below.

A quick note on the name. Zangetsu is also a character in the game Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, a Knightmare Frame in Code Geass and a Kamen Rider form in Kamen Rider Gaim. This guide is about the Bleach Zangetsu, Ichigo's sword.

Zangetsu Shikai: The Cleaver With No Guard

The first Zangetsu you see is the Shikai, and it looks closer to a cleaver or a khyber knife than to a katana. There is no tsuba (guard) and no proper handle. What Ichigo grips is the tang of the blade, wrapped in cloth, and the blade itself is black and silver. It is oversized, far longer than any katana, and Ichigo carries it on his back.

The cloth wrapping is part of the design. In the series it can be let out or wound back, and Ichigo can use it to swing the blade at a distance.

The Shikai is also where you first meet the Getsuga Tensho, the crescent-shaped wave of spiritual energy that Zangetsu sends out from the blade. It stays with the sword in every form.

Tensa Zangetsu: Ichigo's Bankai

Bankai is the final release of a zanpakuto, and many Bankai add scale. Ichigo's goes the other way. His Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu (天鎖斬月, "Heaven Chain Slaying Moon"), shrinks the oversized Shikai into a black daito, a long sword of near-normal size. He masters it during the Soul Society arc and uses it against Byakuya Kuchiki.

Four details make Tensa Zangetsu recognizable on a shelf:

  • The blade: black from guard to tip, slim, in the proportions of a regular long sword.
  • The guard: a crossguard whose four prongs bend out into the shape of a manji (卍), an old Buddhist symbol. It is also the first character of "Bankai" (卍解) as the series writes the word.
  • The hilt end: the Shikai's cloth is gone. A short chain with a broken link hangs from the base of the hilt instead.
  • The outfit: Ichigo's robe changes with the sword, into a long black coat with red lining.

In use, the idea is compression rather than size. Tensa Zangetsu greatly increases Ichigo's speed, and the Getsuga Tensho turns black with a red outline. It is the same technique as in the Shikai, only faster and tighter.

Spoiler warning: the next section reveals plot points from the final arc of Bleach, Thousand-Year Blood War. If you would rather stay spoiler-free, skip to the comparison table.

Old Man Zangetsu, White Zangetsu and the Two-Blade Sword (Spoilers)

Two spirits, one sword

For most of the series, Ichigo meets two figures in his inner world. The first is the one he calls old man Zangetsu: a calm man in a black cloak and sunglasses, sparing with words, who presents himself as the spirit of the sword. The second is White, often called white Zangetsu or Hollow Ichigo: a pale double of Ichigo, the Hollow that lives inside him.

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc flips their roles. Old man Zangetsu is revealed as the embodiment of Ichigo's Quincy powers, which come from his mother Masaki, a pure-blood Quincy. White, the Hollow side of Ichigo, is the true Zangetsu all along.

Where Yhwach fits in

The old man appears in the likeness of a younger Yhwach, the Quincy king who leads the Wandenreich, the empire that declares war on the Soul Society. That resemblance is where the question "is Zangetsu Yhwach" comes from. The story, however, presents the old man as the embodiment of Ichigo's Quincy powers, not as the villain himself.

The reforged two-blade Zangetsu

After the reveal, Ichigo's sword is reforged. In the Royal Realm, the smith Oetsu Nimaiya helps him rebuild it, and it comes back as two black blades: a larger one for White and the Hollow side, a smaller one for the old man and the Quincy side. Ichigo's answer to the whole reveal is simple: both are his zanpakuto. His later Bankai merges the two blades, and we will leave the details to the series.

Shikai vs Bankai: Side by Side

The quickest way to tell the two forms apart is the guard: none on the Shikai, a manji on the Bankai.

Our Tensa Zangetsu replica, the Bankai form of Ichigo's zanpakuto.

The Ichigo sword, full size

Our Tensa Zangetsu replica is a fan-made katana in 1060 carbon steel with a full tang. The blade is black. The handle is wrapped in black cotton ito (the handle cord) over textured synthetic rayskin, with red diamonds showing, and the guard is black and shaped like the manji of Tensa Zangetsu. If any of those terms are new, our sword glossary explains tsuba, ito, saya and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Zangetsu black?

The Shikai is a black and silver cleaver, while the Bankai is entirely black: Tensa Zangetsu is a black daito, and the Getsuga Tensho turns black with a red outline too. In story terms, Bankai compresses the sword's power into a compact blade instead of a bigger one.

Is Zangetsu Yhwach?

No, with a catch (spoiler). Old man Zangetsu takes the likeness of a younger Yhwach, but the story presents him as the embodiment of Ichigo's Quincy powers, and the true Zangetsu is White. The full explanation is in the spoiler section above.

What is the size difference between the Shikai and the Bankai?

The Shikai is much larger: an oversized cleaver that Ichigo carries on his back. The Bankai is a near-normal long sword. Figures for the original designs vary from one source to the next, so we compare shapes rather than numbers. For a physical reference, the measurements of our Bankai replica are in the replica section above.

Can you buy a real Zangetsu?

Zangetsu is a fictional sword, so there is no original to buy. What you can buy is a replica. Ours is the Bankai form in 1060 carbon steel, fan-made and not officially licensed: the Ichigo sword page has the photos and options.

Is it legal to own a Zangetsu replica in Canada?

It depends on where you live and on how a sword is kept and carried, so we cannot give you a one-line answer. Our guide to sword laws in Canada explains that Canadian law does not specifically prohibit owning a katana for collecting or display, and that provinces and municipalities may add their own rules on transport and display. This is general information, not legal advice. Check the rules where you live before you order, and before you travel with a sword.

Where to Go Next

If the Bankai is the Zangetsu you want to display, the Bleach swords collection is the place to start. If you collect across series, our anime swords include Demon Slayer katanas and One Piece katanas. Or head back to the Katana Canada homepage to see the full range.
