What is a katana, and is it the same as a samurai sword?

The katana is a traditional Japanese sword known for its curved blade, precise length, and razor-sharp edge. Often referred to as a samurai sword, it was used by samurai warriors and is admired for both its function and artistry.

What defines an authentic katana sword?

An authentic katana is hand-forged using traditional Japanese techniques. It features a curved blade, intricate steel patterns, and carefully crafted elements like the tsuba and handle. Many katanas also include a groove called bo-hi to improve handling and reduce weight.

How is a katana sword made?

A handmade katana is forged through a precise Japanese process. The steel is repeatedly heated, folded, and hammered to enhance strength. After shaping, the blade is tempered to create a sharp edge and a distinct hamon pattern, making each sword unique.

Which katana should I choose as a beginner?

For beginners, we recommend a durable and affordable katana with carbon steel, full tang construction, and a traditional design. This provides a good balance between performance, safety, and ease of use.

Can I customize my own katana?

Yes. Our custom katana builder allows you to choose every element of your sword, from the blade length and steel type to the guard, handle wrap, and engraving, to create a katana that reflects your unique style.

The Yubashiri sword is the light, swift blade Roronoa Zoro was given for free in Loguetown in One Piece, made here as a 105 cm katana in 1060 carbon steel with a full tang.

A gift between swordsmen

Yubashiri ("Snow Run") is one of the 50 Skillful Grade swords (Ryō Wazamono), prized for being light and well balanced. It was an heirloom of the shopkeeper Ipponmatsu's family.

Zoro, the first member to join Luffy's Straw Hat crew, walked into Ipponmatsu's shop in Loguetown looking for new swords. After he dared the cursed Sandai Kitetsu, Ipponmatsu gave him the Yubashiri for free. Zoro carried it in his Three Sword Style until Enies Lobby, where the Marine captain Shu rusted it away. He later laid what remained to rest at the Rumbar Pirates' graves on Thriller Bark.

The original did not survive the story, so a replica is the way to keep it. Ours has a black cotton ito wrap over synthetic rayskin, a matching black sageo, a gold-toned tsuba and a black saya.

Its story starts with the Sandai Kitetsu sword, the cursed blade Zoro tested in the same shop. After Yubashiri he took up the Shusui sword, while the Wado Ichimonji sword stayed with him throughout. See them all in our Zoro swords collection or the full One Piece swords range.

Questions about the Yubashiri

Is the Yubashiri sword still in Zoro's set?

No. The original was destroyed at Enies Lobby, so it is no longer Zoro's sword, and a replica is the way to keep that chapter of his story on your shelf.

How big is the Yubashiri replica?

105 cm (41 in) overall, with a 72 cm (28 in) blade that is 3.2 cm (1.2 in) wide and 0.7 cm (0.27 in) thick, on a 30 cm (11.8 in) handle. Full tang.

Sharpened or Not Sharpened?

Not Sharpened suits display, cosplay and collecting. Sharpened is the option for adult collectors who handle blades with care. Please check your local rules, starting with our guide to owning a katana in Canada.
